SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A key bridge at the Jersey shore is officially closed for the winter as part of it is being rebuilt.

The Townsends Inlet Bridge, linking Sea Isle City with Avalon, is now closed for eight months while the south end is reconstructed. Seven of the bridge's 27 spans are being replaced after structural problems were discovered during a closure last year.

Acting Cape May County engineer Robert Church said drivers are being re-routed to Route 9 or the Garden State Parkway.

"Although nobody likes to get detoured, it would not be as impactful now as it would be in the season, during the tourism season," he said.

When the work is finished, the space for pedestrians will be expanded from a 2-foot walkway to 6 feet on either side.

"It'll be a definite structural improvement," Church said. "Also, there'll be a new sidewalk on each side of the bridge for the first seven spans that will allow for fishing."

The bridge is expected to reopen by Memorial Day 2019.
