PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Fashion meets function in a new device designed by a Philadelphia company with the safety of seniors in mind.

Freedom Guardian has the looks of a trendy smartwatch — because it is one.

But the main feature allows users to call for help with just a swipe and tap on the touchscreen.

"When you wear it, a lot of times people wouldn't realize you're wearing a button that can save your life," said Medical Guardian Chief Operating Officer Mark Leighton. "They're able to reach our emergency call center and we're able to help them in whatever way they may need."

The wearer can speak to and hear the operator, who can pinpoint the person's location. Loved ones also have the ability to check in.

"Also, you can send medication reminders, alerts and other important reminders to that individual that they'd also get on the watch," Leighton added.

The watch is splash-resistant, displays the weather, and can get up to 48 hours on a single charge. The watch's monitoring fee goes for $44.95 a month, plus a one-time $99 equipment cost.

"It's a new age," Leighton said. "We want people to feel comfortable and be proactive in keeping themselves safe or getting a loved one protected."
