Viral video showing Wildwood cop throwing punches during arrest stirs investigation

WILDWOOD, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Cell phone video making the rounds shows a Wildwood police officer punching a man several times during an arrest over the weekend.

The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office has opened up a use-of-force investigation into the incident, which happened early Sunday morning between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. outside a pizza shop on Pacific Avenue.

The 10-second clip, viewed more than 117,000 times on Twitter, shows several Wildwood cops trying to restrain a man on the ground. One cop then gets on top of him and throws at least six punches at the man’s face, alternating between his left and right hands.

So far, Wildwood police have not commented on the reason for the arrest or the circumstances leading up to the incident. It is not clear what the man is accused of or whether he suffered any serious injuries.

The prosecutor’s office is asking people who may have witnessed the incident to share any video or photographs they may have taken.
