PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A stretch of Girard Avenue, between Frankford and Columbia Avenues in Fishtown, is closed as crews work on repairs following a water main break overnight Wednesday.

Some of the street is torn up. There are big patches of mud. Traffic is tied up. Water Department crews still have plenty of work to do, which spokesman John DiGiulio says started at midnight.

"We got phone calls about a water main break on Girard Avenue between Marlborough and Frankford," he said Thursday morning. "We responded out here and have a break on a 20-inch main."

Crews found water gushing into the streets. DiGiulio says some homes and businesses had low water pressure.

One neighbor, Jean, said she didn’t have any water flowing for a time. She was out when the break occurred. She saw people on a community Facebook page posting about it, so she went home.

"I was like, 'Oh my gosh, is this in my house?' And I was walking over puddles, and the whole street was flooded," she said.

She says water got into some basements in the neighborhood.

The water department has not yet said what caused the break.
