PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A big sink hole that opened up overnight Tuesday because of a water main break is blocking Dickinson Street in South Philadelphia from 12th Street to East Passyunk Avenue.

Water Department spokesman John Dijulio says they were notified of a leak on Monday, and investigators have been checking it out, but they couldn't find the source in time.

"Unfortunately, before we were able to find the exact leak, the street caved in and caused this washout that you see behind me," Dijulio told CBS-3 Wednesday morning.

Dijulio says crews were already on the scene when the sinkhole opened up.

"The street will need to be obvious fully investigated, see what's underground, see what took place," he said.

About 60 homes on the block were left without running water until service was restored late Wednesday afternoon.

The Water department says repairs could take up to a month.
