Wings ready for first road game Saturday in Rochester

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Wings will play the first road game of their expansion season on Saturday night when they visit the Rochester Knighthawks.

The Wings opened the campaign back on Dec. 15 with a 17-15 home loss to the Buffalo Bandits at the Center.

"Guys played hard, battled, fought all game long, came back, tied it up (at 15 before Buffalo scored the final two goals)," head coach Paul Day said. "We had a pretty good performance. Not the result we wanted, but we expect to get out every night and get a chance to win and that's exactly what we had."

Day also serves as the GM of the Wings, and he thinks he's got a group that has a bright future.

"I've actually been unbelievably impressed with the guys that we've brought in and the players and the type of people they are and how close they've kind of come together in a month," he said.

Saturday's game will be the season opener for Rochester and Day says he wants his team to utilize its speed against the Knighthawks.

"We really need to get up and down the floor," he said. "Obviously on the road, it's always tougher. I spent over 20 years in that building (the Rochester Blue Cross Arena) myself working with Rochester. It's a great environment, it's an old barn I would say, an old building and it's a lot of fun to play in. But I think our youth and our speed really will help us in that building. We like to play fast and we like to play physical. Game #1, I'm sure we surprised Buffalo, one of the teams that people have picked to win the East. You're not going to surprise teams anymore. We've got one game under our belts, the Knighthawks haven't played a game and we need to jump off, get a good start against them. Hopefully we're up to game speed and they're still at practice speed."

Saturday game gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
