PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philly Pops Friday unveiled the shows in their upcoming season, and the orchestra starts off their year with a new conductor.

Philly Pops president and CEO Frank Giordano says the orchestra is kicking off its 2020/2021 season with a new conductor, David Charles Abell.

"He was our principal guest conductor and now we named him principal conductor and music director, and he is the architect of this very exciting upcoming season. This is his first season in charge," Giordano said.

Abell announced a number of shows, including the Philly Pops Beatles, Star Wars, Broadway, Moody Blues and more.

"It's a big deal. It's a big deal for me and I hope for the orchestra," said Abell.

His biggest challenge so far, he says, is making sure the programs are entertaining for all.

"Making the programs is a challenge because this is entertainment. I mean, it's an orchestra, but everyone has to be entertained. It has to work for families of all ages," he said.

"I think it's seven subscription series concerts plus Christmas. Now, Christmas is a big deal. It's 11 concerts," Giordano added.

And there will also be free shows with their new Memorial Day concert featuring fireworks from Welcome America.

"At the Mann Music Center on Memorial Day, we'll give away over 10,000 tickets, all free, and obviously the concert we do in front of Independence Hall on July 3," Giordano said.
