PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A woman has been charged for causing a multi-vehicle crash while driving under the influence, resulting in the death of a toddler.

On Wednesday around 6 p.m., authorities say 28-year-old Brionna Wright of Montgomery County was speeding down Frankford Avenue in Mayfair. Witnesses said she was driving erratically.

Wright sideswiped a SEPTA bus, then struck four other cars.

The multi-car crash killed a 3-year-old girl and injured six others, including a 7-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man.

Sources say the children were not buckled in their respective cars at the time of the crash.

Wright is charged with third-degree murder, homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, and resisting arrest, among other charges.

“This incident in Mayfair was another completely preventable tragedy that culminated in the violent death of a toddler,” District Attorney Larry Krasner said in a statement.

Krasner is urging Philadelphians not to “confuse emptier streets and fewer pedestrians” with an excuse to speed or drive while intoxicated.

“Just as we are wearing masks to protect others from COVID-19 infection, so should we consider the safety of others every time we get behind the wheel,” he added.
