UPDATED 10 a.m.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police say a woman gave birth prematurely Tuesday morning shortly after the pickup truck she was in was rear-ended by a suspected drunk driver.

Around 2:30 a.m., police say the 42-year-old pregnant woman and a 36-year-old male driver were in a brown work pickup truck at Overbrook and Haverford avenues when a man in a white Lexus slammed into them from behind. The force was so great, the Lexus ended up on its roof.

The woman went into labor and everyone was rushed to nearby Lankenau hospital.

Police say the baby, which was due in May, was born at the hospital and is in critical condition. The mother and the driver are both expected to be OK.

Police say the 56-year-old man who crashed into them is also stable but he’ll face DUI charges.

CORRECTION: The story is updated to reflect that the baby was born at the hospital, but the scene of the crash.
