Officials: Overturned tractor-trailer accident leaves 1 dead, 1 injured on I-95

April 28, 2018 - 3:57 pm

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Authorities say one person is dead and was left injured following an accident on I-95.

The incident happened about 2:30 p.m. Saturday when a tractor-trailer overturned on exit 19 to Packer Avenue and the Walt Whitman Bridge from northbound I-95.

Michael Vasos was getting gas when he says he heard a loud noise.

"It was like BA-BOOM! It was like, kind of a boom and a pop, and like a roar," he explains.

According to officials, when the tractor-trailer overturned the cargo, watermelons, were sent raining down onto the I-95 southbound lanes. At the same time a vehicle traveling along the southboud lanes, under neither the overpass, was hit by falling debris had it's roof smashed in with two people inside, authorites say.

A traffic cam showed the car off to the side of the road, wedged against a guardrail, and rescue crews using the Jaws of Life to pry away the vehicle’s roof to free the two people trapped inside.

“It's like almost amazing timing, where a truck is overturning, the cargo is now going over the overpass guardrail and a vehicle happens to be traveling at the same time and make a direct hit like that," Vasos said. "It's the wrong time at the wrong place."

Belmont police say the passenger, 61-year-old Thanh Tam Nguyen, and the driver would be rused to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where Nguyen would later be pronounced dead.

The driver, who's identity has not yet been released, is said to be in stable condition, according to authorities.

Officials say the tractor-trailer operation did not sustain any major injuries and is cooperting with police.
