PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- The Philadelphia Archdiocese is sponsoring a pilgrimage to the World Meeting of Families set in Dublin this summer.

Philadelphia was the site of the last world meeting event in September 2015 which was capped by a two-day, whirlwind visit by Pope Francis.

Father Dennis Gill, who's the rector of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on the Parkway, is leading the pilgrimage.

Gill says Philadelphia's gathering nearly three years ago highlighted the role of the Christian family in society.

"Ireland hopes to broadcast the same message," he said. "And, it's our way of supporting the church in Ireland as it takes on this international endeavor of promoting the family in 2018."

Gill says anyone is welcome to go on the pilgrimage, which runs from August 20 through 27.
