PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A veteran political consultant, who regularly helped Philadelphia Congressman Bob Brady get re-elected through the years, is set to go on trial Thursday for his alleged role in an illegal campaign scheme.

Ken Smukler is accused of participating in a scheme in the 2012 Democratic Primary to disguise illegal campaign contributions to persuade Brady's challenger to drop out.

Smukler is also charged with filing false financial reports to hide illegal donations to the campaign of former Congresswoman Marjorie Margolies, in her failed attempt in 2014 to reclaim the seat.

Among the interesting aspects of this case, federal investigators never explained why Brady was not charged and the statute of limitations has expired. As for Margolies, she too, was never charged.

Opening statements are expected to happen at the federal courthouse in Philadelphia.

Smukler denies the charges.
