Five Philadelphia Phillies players and three staff members have tested positive for coronavirus in recent days, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury.

The identity of the individuals are not known to the public, although the five players had been training at the Clearwater facility in anticipation of the upcoming season.

The Phillies have confirmed the validity of the report and issued this statement:

Salisbury also notes that a "significant number of team personnel are awaiting test results, so it’s possible the outbreak could worsen."

The outbreak comes at a time when Major League Baseball and the Players Association are in the middle of a public financial dispute, in hopes of agreeing on a shortened 2020 season.

"This is the first known outbreak in MLB and the commissioner's office is aware of it," Salisbury writes. "It is not known if the situation will affect negotiations with the union. Both MLB and the union have consistently stated that matters of health supersede all others as they try to restart the game."
