PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- For the first time in ten years, SEPTA has announced a new bus route in the city.

The new Route 49 bus is expected to go into service sometime in early 2019. SEPTA's Andrew Busch says the bus was designed to help under served communities.

"This bus will operate Strawberry Mansion, through Brewerytown, Fairmount and then to Grays Ferry," Busch said. "And what this does is it provides those neighborhoods with a direct connection to University City."

He says it will also allow them access to health care and other resources.

"Right now, we're projecting about 3,000 riders on an average weekday," Busch said, "so we expect that it's going to have strong ridership right out of the gate."

Busch says a lot of research, and residential input went into the idea.

"There was a lot of feedback over the years that we had received from the communities asking for this type of service," he said, "because while we have other bus routes that you can match up to get there, there isn't one that provides a direct route."

The route has been in the planning stages for three years.
