PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- The Villanova University football team is in the midst of spring workouts on the Main Line.

Mark Ferrante, starting his second season as the head coach of the Wildcats, likes what he has seen so far out of his group.

"Spring practice is going well," he tells KYW Newsradio. "A lot of young guys getting some good quality reps. Some of the older guys [are] bringing them under their wing and taking good care of them on the field. It's been very enthusiastic, very energetic and it's been fun to be back on the field during spring drills."

The Wildcats are coming off a 5-6 2017 season that was marred by significant injuries to several key players on both sides of the ball.

"A lot of the guys that had gotten injured unfortunately during last fall are either on or ahead of schedule," Ferrante says. "So they are all getting back into activity. Some of them have been cleared already to fully participate in the spring workout drills now that we're on the field. Some of them are still restricted somewhat, but they are all doing some good work, some good activity, so should have them all back come summer and then preseason time."

One of those injuries last season was to starting quarterback Zach Bednarczyk. The rising senior suffered a knee injury in a win over Towson.

"He is back full speed," Ferrante says. "So he is looking good."

Ferrante has been impressed with what he has seen from the offensive line over the last month.

"We have a couple guys that have very limited reps in games up to their first and now into their second year, but they seem to be coming together pretty well in spring practice," Ferrante says. "So if we can continue to gel up front on the offensive line, obviously that's huge because that's where it all starts."

Villanova opens its 2018 season on September 1st with a game against Temple at the Linc.
