ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Stockton University held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new beachfront campus in Atlantic City.

The new $178.3 million Stockton University campus sits right on the southern end of Atlantic City's boardwalk, just a few steps from the beach.

The university will give New Jersey students another option for higher education in-state, and some officials hope that it eventually leads to Atlantic City becoming the next great collegiate town.

New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney said making this campus a reality is huge win all around.

"It is the very beginning of a new economy for Atlantic City, Atlantic County and South Jersey," he said. "And the great thing is you're expanding capacity at our universities, so we're not going to have as many young people leave the state because they can't go to school in New Jersey."

The economic boost will come from the abundance of jobs available at the casinos in town, as well as job opportunities in surrounding towns.

Not to mention, there's no shortage of nightlife and activities for the students to enjoy while getting their college education.

"This is a legacy that can be built upon," said New Jersey Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald, "and we're going to build from here right down that boardwalk till this city's turned around."
