PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Villanova’s football team is headed to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

The Wildcats will be on the road in the first round, visiting Southeastern Louisiana University on Saturday.

"Our guys are excited," said Villanova head coach Mark Ferrante.

Villanova earned this opportunity by going 9-3 (5-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association) during the regular season, including their eighth straight win over rival Delaware this past weekend, 55-33.

"When you play your rival, you're always excited for that one," Ferrante said. "Our guys came out and performed at a good level on both sides of the ball and special teams."

It was a day to remember in that win for junior wide receiver Changa Hodge, who caught eight passes for 236 yards and four touchdowns. The 236 yards were the fifth-most in a game by an FCS player this season.

This will be the 13th FCS playoff appearance in program history for the Wildcats and the first in Ferrante's three seasons as head coach.

Southeastern Louisiana is in the playoff field for the first time since 2014. The Lions are out of the Southland Conference, and they bring a 7-4 record into the postseason.

"They're big, they're fast, they're physical," Ferrante said. "They fly around to the football. When you look at them statistically, they are very similar to us."

The winner of this game will visit Montana in the second round.

Saturday's game in Hammond, Louisiana will get underway at 4 p.m. EST.
