PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- A West Philadelphia man has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 21-year-old art student.

Authorities say 22-year-old David Grier is accused of strangling Kierra Johnson in November 2017, near Cobbs Creek Parkway and Spruce Street.

Police are saying the motive is believed to be robbery. Homicide Captain John Ryan says Grier has prior arrests.

"He had one juvenile contact" Ryan said, "and he has a 2016 attempted murder arrest in California for which he is on parole for."

Ryan says detectives received assistance from SEPTA early in the investigation. It was determined the Hussian art student and Grier were seen together on public transit not long before the discovery of the woman's body in the creek.
