PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Thanksgiving on the ski trail has become a tradition for some early-bird snow hounds.

Whether it's a four-day holiday or a week on the slopes, an eight-hour drive gets you into Canadian snow country, and even less to reach some favorite New England destinations.

There's no guarantee, but when Mary and I started our on-and-off Thanksgiving Canadian skiing tradition, we always found snow at Mont-Tremblant, Québec. Slopes there are expected to open on Nov. 22.

The American dollar right now buys 25 percent more in Canada. On the slopes, you'll find fewer crowds on runs, no lift lines, and an early winter tan.

In Vermont, Killington and Mount Snow have already opened. Jay Peak Resort is planning a turkey and trimmings dinner as part of a rock-bottom pricing package.

If friends and family are in the holiday mix, take them along, pack the turkey, and rent a townhouse condo for six to 10 of your nearest and dearest.
