Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Winter in the islands

December 06, 2018 - 1:22 pm

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — When winter winds begin to blow at home, you can always rely on warm breezes and swaying palms to the south.

Just imagine yourself and a couple of friends on your own chartered sailboat. You voyage on a coral blue sea from island to island, coming and going as your please. If you don't have sailing experience, you can hire a captain and learn to sail along the way.

The most popular cruising grounds are in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. Long-time charter skipper Jim Viega said a typical morning is beautiful and sunny, moored in an island cove.

"The water will be transparent. You may see some sea turtles swimming besides the boat," he said.

You'll live in bathing suits and visit beachfront Tiki bars or outdoor eateries.

The cost, when split between two or three couples, is surprisingly reasonable.
